22. “Sed santos, porque Yo soy santo.”
    ¿Quién es, entonces, Aquel que puede dar semejante mandato?… Él mismo ha revelado su nombre, el nombre que le es propio, el que solo Él puede llevar: “Yo soy el que soy,” dijo a Moisés, el único Viviente, el principio de todos los seres. “En Él vivimos, nos movemos y existimos,” dice el Apóstol.

“Sed santos, porque Yo soy santo.”
Me parece que este es el mismo deseo expresado el día de la creación, cuando Dios dijo: “Hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen y semejanza.”
Es siempre el anhelo del Creador: identificarse y asociar a su criatura consigo mismo.
San Pedro afirma “que hemos sido hechos partícipes de la naturaleza divina”;
San Pablo recomienda que conservemos “ese principio de Su existencia” que Él nos ha dado;
y el discípulo del amor nos dice: “Ahora somos hijos de Dios, y aún no se ha manifestado lo que hemos de ser; pero sabemos que cuando Él aparezca, seremos semejantes a Él, porque le veremos tal como es. Y todo aquel que tiene esta esperanza en Él se purifica, así como Él es puro.”

Ser santos como Dios es santo: tal es, me parece, la medida de los hijos de su amor.
¿No dijo acaso el Maestro: “Sed perfectos como vuestro Padre celestial es perfecto”?

23. Hablando a Abraham, Dios le dijo: “Camina en mi presencia y sé perfecto.”
    He ahí, pues, el camino para alcanzar esa perfección que nuestro Padre celestial nos pide.
    San Pablo, después de haberse sumergido en los designios divinos, nos lo revela claramente cuando escribe:
    “Dios nos eligió en Él antes de la creación del mundo, para que fuésemos santos e inmaculados en su presencia, en el amor.”

A la luz de este mismo santo quiero yo ser iluminada, para no desviarme de este magnífico camino de la presencia de Dios, por donde el alma camina “sola con el Solo”, guiada por “la fuerza de Su diestra”, “bajo la sombra de Sus alas, sin temer el terror de la noche, ni la flecha que vuela de día, ni el mal que acecha en la oscuridad, ni las asechanzas del demonio de mediodía.”

24. “Despojaos del hombre viejo con el que vivíais en vuestra vida pasada,” dice el Apóstol, “y revestíos del hombre nuevo, creado según Dios en la justicia y santidad de la verdad.”
    He aquí el camino trazado: solo tenemos que despojarnos de nosotros mismos para seguirlo según la voluntad de Dios.
    Despojarse de sí mismo, morir a sí mismo, perder de vista el yo:
    me parece que esto quiso decir el Maestro cuando exclamó: “Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, tome su cruz y niéguese a sí mismo.”

“Si vivís según la carne, moriréis; pero si con el espíritu hacéis morir las obras de la carne, viviréis.”
Esta es la muerte que Dios pide, y de la cual se dice: “La muerte ha sido absorbida en la victoria.”
“¡Oh muerte!” —dice el Señor—, “Yo seré tu muerte”; es decir:
¡Oh alma, hija mía adoptiva, mírame, y te olvidarás de ti misma; fluye enteramente en mi Ser, ven a morir en mí, para que Yo viva en ti!”

22. “Be holy, for I am holy.”
    Who then is this One who can give such a command?
    He Himself has revealed His name—the name proper to Him, the one only He can bear: “I am who Am,” He said to Moses, the only Living One, the source of all other beings. “In Him,” says the Apostle, “we live and move and have our being.”

“Be holy, for I am holy.”
It seems to me that this is the same wish expressed on the day of creation when God said: “Let us make man in Our image and likeness.”
It is always the Creator’s desire to identify and to unite His creature with Himself.
Saint Peter tells us “that we have been made sharers in the divine nature”;
Saint Paul exhorts us to hold fast to “that beginning of His existence” which He has given us;
and the disciple of love proclaims: “Now we are the children of God, and it has not yet appeared what we shall be; but we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him makes himself holy, just as He Himself is holy.”

To be holy as God is holy—such is, it seems to me, the measure of the children of His love!
Did not the Master say: “Be perfect, as your Heavenly Father is perfect”?

23. Speaking to Abraham, God said: “Walk in My presence and be perfect.”
    This, then, is the way to achieve that perfection which our Heavenly Father asks of us.
    Saint Paul, after having immersed himself in the divine counsels, revealed it clearly when he wrote:
    “God has chosen us in Him before the creation of the world, that we might be holy and immaculate in His presence, in love.”

By the light of this same saint, I too wish to be enlightened, so that I might walk without deviation along that magnificent road of the presence of God, where the soul journeys “alone with the Alone,” guided by “the strength of His right arm,” “under the shelter of His wings, not fearing the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that lays waste at noonday.”

24. “Put off the old man, who belonged to your former way of life,” says the Apostle, “and put on the new man, who has been created according to God in justice and holiness of truth.”
    This is the path set before us: we have only to strip off self to follow it as God wills.
    To strip off self, to die to self, to lose sight of self—
    it seems to me the Master meant this when He said: “If anyone would come after Me, let him take up his cross and deny himself.”

“For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the flesh, you will live.”
This is the death God asks for, the death of which it is said: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
“O death,” says the Lord, “I will be your death”; that is to say:
O soul, My adopted daughter, look at Me and you will forget yourself; flow entirely into My Being, come die in Me, that I may live in you!
